Mumbai: A tragic road accident near the Worli Sea Link in the early hours of Tuesday, 9 September 2025, claimed the life of a senior Mumbai Police constable and left a woman constable injured. The incident has raised fresh concerns over road safety in high-traffic zones.

Constable killed, colleague injured

According to officials, the accident occurred around 7:25 AM near the Coastal Road–Bandra Kurla Complex connector, close to the Worli Sea Link. Constable Dattatray Kumbhar (52), who was on duty with Constable Riddhi Patil, was hit by a speeding Hyundai Grand i10. Both officers were attached to the Worli Police Station.

Kumbhar was rushed to Wockhardt Hospital, where he was declared dead. Patil, who sustained injuries in the crash, is under medical care and reported to be in stable condition.

Driver detained and investigation underway

Police have identified the driver as Ramchandra Rane (46). He has been detained and booked under relevant sections of the IPC and Motor Vehicles Act. His blood samples have been collected to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from the Coastal Road stretch to assess the car’s speed and piece together the sequence of events that led to the accident.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Choudhary visited the hospital soon after the incident to meet the injured officer and the bereaved family. The Mumbai Police department has expressed deep grief over the loss of Constable Kumbhar and assured that all necessary support would be provided to his family.
