Mumbai: Security across the city has been heightened after Mumbai Traffic Police received a threatening WhatsApp message on Thursday warning of multiple terror attacks. The message, which claimed that 34 vehicles had been fitted with “human bombs,” prompted an immediate response from law enforcement agencies.

The threat message

According to officials, the message alleged that the planned blasts would “shake entire Mumbai.” It further claimed that 14 Pakistani terrorists had infiltrated India and threatened to use 400 kg of RDX explosives. The sender identified the organisation as ‘Lashkar-e-Jihadi’.

The message was received at the traffic police control room on Thursday, coinciding with preparations for Anant Chaturthi, the final day of the Ganesh festival, when lakhs of devotees gather for processions across Mumbai.

Police and agency response

Following the threat, the Crime Branch launched an immediate investigation, while the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and other central intelligence agencies were also alerted. Police are currently verifying the credibility of the claims and are conducting combing operations at sensitive locations.

“We are taking every precaution to ensure safety. Citizens should not panic or believe in rumours but report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station,” an official said.

Security arrangements for Ganesh festival finale

Mumbai Police have already deployed additional forces across the city to manage the large crowds expected on Saturday, the culmination of the 10-day Ganeshotsav celebrations. Security has been tightened around immersion routes, railway stations, bus terminals, religious places, and coastal areas.

Authorities said lakhs of devotees are expected to participate in the immersion processions, which often continue late into the night. In view of the threat message, extra vigilance is being maintained along key procession routes, with teams scanning vehicles and monitoring movements closely.

Citizens urged to stay vigilant

Police officials have appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. Citizens are being encouraged to play an active role in assisting law enforcement by promptly reporting suspicious behaviour or unattended objects during the festivities.

“While the investigations are ongoing, all measures have been taken to ensure that the festival concludes peacefully,” a senior police officer assured.

Outlook

The threat comes at a time when security agencies across the country are already on alert during major festivals. While the credibility of the message is under scrutiny, Mumbai Police said they are treating the matter with utmost seriousness to avoid any potential risk.
