Mumbai: Commuters travelling on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway should brace for temporary disruptions over the next two days, as authorities have announced a three-hour traffic block on specific stretches near Lonavala for maintenance work.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will carry out shuttering removal and painting work on a bridge located between Dongargaon and Kusgaon, leading to complete traffic suspension in one direction on each day.
Timings and affected routes
According to officials, the expressway will be closed for three hours on both days:
- April 24 (Thursday): Mumbai-bound traffic will be fully closed from 12 pm to 3 pm
- April 25 (Friday): Pune-bound traffic will be fully suspended from 12 pm to 3 pm
The affected stretch lies between Dongargaon and Kusgaon near Lonavala, a busy section of the expressway that witnesses heavy daily traffic.
Diversions for commuters
Authorities have put diversion plans in place to manage traffic flow during the closure.
For Mumbai-bound vehicles (April 24)
Traffic will be diverted via:
- Kiwale
- Dehu Road
- Talegaon through National Highway 48
Vehicles will rejoin the expressway at the Kusgaon toll plaza.
For Pune-bound vehicles (April 25)
Diversions will begin from Kusgaon toll plaza, with vehicles routed through:
- National Highway 48
- Dehu Road
- Kiwale
Advisory for travellers
Officials have urged commuters to plan their journeys carefully to avoid inconvenience.
- Avoid travelling between 12 pm and 3 pm on both days if possible
- Consider leaving early or after 3 pm to bypass the closure
- Expect delays on diversion routes, especially along NH-48, due to increased traffic
The expressway is one of the busiest corridors connecting Mumbai and Pune, and even short disruptions can lead to significant congestion.
Helpline numbers for assistance
In case of emergencies or assistance during travel, commuters can contact:
- MSRDC Control Room: 9822498224
- Highway Police Helpline: 9833498334
Authorities have advised travellers to save these numbers before starting their journey.
Conclusion
With essential maintenance work underway, the temporary closure is expected to ensure safer infrastructure in the long run. However, commuters should stay updated, follow diversion routes and allow extra travel time to avoid inconvenience during the affected hours.
