New Delhi: Indian warship INS Sumitra conducted a daring rescue operation off the coast of Somalia, saving 19 Pakistani sailors who were held hostage by pirates aboard the Iranian-flagged fishing vessel FV Al Naeemi. The pirates, armed and numbering 11, had seized control of the vessel, prompting the swift intervention of the Indian Navy. Within a span of just 36 hours, INS Sumitra successfully thwarted the piracy attempt, leveraging its advanced capabilities and deploying helicopters and boats to coerce the pirates into releasing the hostages unharmed.
In a statement, the Indian Navy commended the rapid response of INS Sumitra, highlighting its efficient tactics and unwavering determination in securing the safe release of the crew and the vessel. Following the rescue operation, Navy personnel boarded the vessel to ensure the well-being of the crew members.
This rescue marked the second successful anti-piracy operation conducted by INS Sumitra within a short timeframe, emphasizing its crucial role in safeguarding maritime security in the region. The vessel, an indigenous offshore patrol vessel of the Indian Navy, has been deployed specifically for anti-piracy missions in the waters east of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.
In a separate incident, Indian Navy’s guided missile destroyer INS Visakhapatnam demonstrated its capabilities during an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden by assisting in extinguishing a fire onboard a merchant vessel that had been struck by a missile. These swift and decisive actions underscore the Indian Navy’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in critical maritime routes.
