Udupi: The Indian railways saw yet another case of theft when a passenger going from Udupi to Bangalore found his laptop bag missing. A search was conducted and the culprit was identified as Pudi Swaraj, who is a native of Andhra Pradesh, serving as an assistant loco pilot at the Sakleshpur railway station in Hassan.

The 33-year-old was later found with a trolley bag containing gadgets and gold that he stole from passengers, all of which, when put together, were found to be worth an amount of 33 lakhs. On being questioned by Superintendent of Police Soumyalatha SK, it was found out that the young pilot was burdened with debts for his marriage and his father’s medical treatment. 

He would thus go around in his uniform, watching out for careless customers that he could steal from. He would then gather all valuables from bags he picked, using them to make money for his loan, while dumping the remaining things he would find in them. 

And that is not all. Superintendent SK also reports how the Arsikere railway station has seen five such cases so far. The police will be conducting further investigations on this, to know if the young culprit has been involved in any of these cases. 

In the meanwhile, the police are making efforts to identify the owners of the stolen goods that they have recovered. This leaves us with the age-old wisdom that various other similar incidents in the past have taught us. You can never be too careful with your belongings on a train, and the more precautions you take, the better.
