A group of youths who arrived in Mussoorie to celebrate the New Year allegedly violated traffic rules and damaged public property by breaking through a vehicle barrier on Mall Road, prompting the local administration and police to initiate strict action.
The incident, which took place on New Year’s Eve, was captured on CCTV cameras and further brought to light after the accused themselves uploaded a video of the act on Instagram, where it went viral.
Barrier broken despite police presence
According to officials, vehicles were being stopped at the Mall Road barrier as per regulations due to heavy tourist movement. However, the youths allegedly ignored the personnel stationed at the checkpoint, refused to stop their car, and rammed through the barrier.
The damaged barrier is located near the Picture Palace end of Mall Road, a busy and sensitive tourist stretch. The viral video clearly shows the vehicle speeding through and causing damage to the barricade.
Complaint registered, probe underway
Mussoorie Municipal Council Assistant Executive Officer Gaurav Bhasin said the incident was serious and amounted to damage of public property and violation of law and order.
A formal complaint has been registered at the Mussoorie Kotwali based on CCTV footage and the video circulated on social media. The municipal council has demanded strict action against those involved.
Accused being identified
Mussoorie Kotwal Manoj Aswal said that although the vehicle involved was bearing an “Applied For” number plate, police are identifying the vehicle and occupants using technical evidence.
“The Instagram account from which the video was uploaded is also under investigation. Such acts of indiscipline and damage to public property will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that legal action would be taken against the culprits.
Advisory to tourists
The police and district administration have appealed to tourists to celebrate responsibly and adhere to local laws, especially in crowded and environmentally sensitive destinations like Mussoorie.
Officials warned that strict action will be taken against anyone found disrupting law and order or damaging public property during peak tourist periods.
