Sirsi: In a tragic incident, a nine-year-old boy lost his life after being accidentally shot by his younger brother with an air gun in Somanalli village, Sirsi taluk, Uttara Kannada district.
The victim, identified as Kariyappa (9), was the son of Basappa Undiyar, who works at a house in the village. On Friday, Kariyappa was playing with his seven-year-old younger brother when the incident occurred.
Pellet hits chest, boy dies instantly
According to police sources, the children had gained access to an air gun that had been kept near a plantation to scare away monkeys. While playing with the weapon, the younger sibling inadvertently pulled the trigger. The pellet struck Kariyappa directly in the chest, causing his instant death.
CCTV footage of the incident has been recovered and is under police examination.
Police begin probe
Senior police officials, including Additional Superintendent of Police Jagadish, DySP Geeta Patil, and CPI Shashikant Verma, visited the spot and conducted an inquiry.
The body was shifted to Sirsi Hospital for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered at Sirsi Rural Police Station, and further investigation is underway.

The shocking incident has left the local community in grief, highlighting the dangers of leaving weapons unattended in households and plantations, especially in areas where children are present.
