Northern India, including Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana, reeled under severe coldwave conditions on Sunday, with temperatures plummeting to as low as 1.7°C in some areas. Punjab’s Adampur IAF emerged as the coldest spot, recording a freezing 1.3°C.

Delhiites woke up to a biting chill as Safdarjung, the city’s key weather station, reported a minimum temperature of 4.9°C—a sharp 3°C drop within 24 hours. Palam recorded a slightly higher 6.2°C. In Punjab, Faridkot hit 1°C, with Gurdaspur and Bathinda not far behind at 2°C and 4.6°C. Haryana’s Hisar experienced a bone-chilling 1.7°C, while Narnaul registered 3°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts dense fog over Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Northeast India on December 16 and 17, significantly reducing visibility. Ground frost is likely in isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh on December 15, intensifying the already frigid conditions.

Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions will persist in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir until December 19. Rajasthan will also experience plunging temperatures from December 17 to 20.

Eastern and Western regions saw moderate chills with 8–14°C, while Northwest and Central India recorded minimum temperatures well below seasonal norms. Contrastingly, the Southern Peninsula experienced near-average conditions.

As coldwave sweeps through, Northwest India braces for further icy spells, with temperatures dropping 5°C below normal in some areas.
