Bhubaneswar: Four people were killed after a boat carrying around 50 passengers capsized in the Mahanadi River in Jharsuguda district in Odisha on Friday. The search operation from the rescue team is on the way on Saturday to locate missing persons.
Sources said that at least seven people are still missing. The boat capsized near Sardha Ghat in Jharsuguda, which was ferrying passengers from the Bandhipali area of Bargarh District. During the journey, it encountered turbulent water.
Deputy Commissioner Kartikeya Goyal said the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) is continuing the search operation for the missing people.
He said that scuba divers from Bhubaneshwar will join the search operation and confirmed that so far, 48 people have been rescued.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.
BJP leaders alleged that the boat was operating without a valid licence and was overcrowded without any safety measures for the passengers.
