Over 100 primary school teachers in Chhattisgarh have been protesting at the Tuta ground in New Raipur since last month, fearing termination from their positions due to a recent High Court order. Many of these teachers left other government jobs to pursue their teaching careers, while others took out loans after securing teaching jobs. Some are also nearing the cut-off age, making it impossible for them to apply for other government positions.
The issue began when the Chhattisgarh High Court ruled on April 2 that holders of B.Ed degrees were not eligible for primary school teacher positions. Instead, the ruling paved the way for those with a Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) to be considered for the roles.
Despite the ruling, several B.Ed holders were hired for the positions in September 2023, with the understanding that their employment was contingent upon the court’s final decision. With the ruling now going against them, the Chhattisgarh government has initiated the process to terminate their services.
The protesting teachers are now demanding justice and a review of the decision, as many of them face uncertain futures and the threat of losing their livelihoods.
