A routine commute in Rajasthan’s Banswara district turned into a serious safety concern after a video from the Anandpuri area went viral, showing an alarmingly overcrowded jeep ferrying passengers in extremely dangerous conditions.
The clip shows a jeep, designed to carry around 16 passengers, packed with nearly 60 people. With no space left inside, several passengers can be seen clinging to the vehicle from the outside — sitting on the bonnet, roof and stepney, and even hanging from the driver’s door as the vehicle moves along the road.
Children and elderly among passengers
What has disturbed viewers most is the presence of elderly people, women and young children among those precariously positioned on the moving vehicle. Despite the excessive load, the jeep appears to be speeding, with the driver showing little regard for passenger safety.
Observers noted that the vehicle was so overloaded that the driver’s visibility seemed restricted to the front windscreen alone, creating a scenario many online compared to goods being crammed into a transport truck rather than human beings being carried.
Lack of public transport cited
Local reports suggest that the Anandpuri region, which is largely tribal, suffers from a severe shortage of public transport facilities, including state-run buses. Due to the lack of reliable and affordable options, residents are often forced to depend on private vehicles, even when they are dangerously overcrowded.
Residents say such scenes are not uncommon in interior parts of the district, where connectivity remains poor and demand far exceeds available transport services.
Authorities step in after video goes viral
Following the circulation of the video on social media, district authorities swung into action. According to reports, teams from the Transport Department and Traffic Police conducted inspections and raids in the area, issuing challans to several vehicles found violating passenger capacity and safety norms.
District Transport Officer Pankaj Sharma acknowledged that inadequate transport infrastructure contributes to such violations but emphasised that strict enforcement would continue. “Action will be taken against those flouting traffic rules, regardless of the circumstances,” he said.
The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need to strengthen public transport infrastructure in tribal and rural regions to prevent commuters from being forced into life-threatening travel conditions.
