A smoke scare inside a coach of a Sahid Khudiram-bound Kolkata Metro train triggered panic among commuters on Thursday morning, though no injuries were reported, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred at Chandi Chowk station around 8:15 am, when smoke was detected after the train halted at the platform. A Metro Railway spokesperson said all passengers were safely evacuated. “The rake was emptied and immediately taken to the carshed for inspection to determine the source of the smoke,” the spokesperson informed.
Though there were no casualties or injuries, the sudden presence of smoke led to commotion and fear among morning commuters. However, Metro services continued to operate normally in both up and down directions on the Blue Line (Dakshineshwar-Sahid Khudiram).
The cause of the smoke is yet to be identified, and Metro authorities have launched a technical investigation into the matter. The incident has raised questions about onboard safety protocols, even as services remained undisrupted.
This comes amid recent concerns over passenger behaviour and safety in Kolkata Metro, including viral videos of rule violations and coach vandalism. Authorities have urged passengers to stay calm in such situations and report any suspicious activity or malfunction to Metro staff promptly.
