Perilous tree removed on Wayanad Ghat Road, commuters breathe a sigh of relief
WAYANAD: A dangerous tree that loomed over the Wayanad Ghat Road was safely cut and cleared on Tuesday, easing fears among travelers using this crucial mountain pass.
The coordinated effort involved the forest department, police, fire brigade, and volunteers from the Churam Samrakshana Samithy. Two police patrol units had been deployed overnight as a precaution in case the tree fell before it could be removed.
The Ghat Road is a vital artery, connecting Wayanad with Kozhikode, Kannur, and Malappuram. Despite having a government medical college in the district, patients in critical condition are often rushed to Kozhikode for specialized care, making this route even more essential.
Volunteers spotted the tree on Monday following a minor landslip. “We alerted the police, who quickly involved forest and revenue officials. Though a night operation was considered, safety concerns led to the removal being carried out during daylight,” said a volunteer from Churam Samrakshana Samithy.
Alarmingly, over 60 other trees along the same stretch are believed to pose similar hazards. However, officials admit the clearance process is moving at a slow pace, leaving commuters at continued risk.
