A tragic incident involving the death of a pet cat has resulted in a meaningful road safety intervention in Arambol, with authorities installing speed breakers on an internal road frequently used as a shortcut by motorists.
The cat, named Pao, was killed after being hit by a speeding vehicle on the residential stretch. The incident highlighted long-standing concerns about reckless driving on the road, which is regularly used by pedestrians, including children and senior citizens.
Resident flags danger after fatal incident
Following the incident, local resident Sushant Naik raised the issue with authorities, pointing out that vehicles often overspeed while cutting through the internal road to avoid traffic on main routes. He warned that the lack of traffic-calming measures posed a serious risk to residents and visitors alike.
Naik pursued the matter through repeated follow-ups, urging officials to take preventive action before a more serious human tragedy occurred.
Speed breakers installed after official intervention
After the concerns were escalated, the North Goa Collectorate, along with the Public Works Department Goa, acted to install speed breakers at the accident-prone location.
Naik publicly thanked the district administration, the PWD and other concerned departments for responding promptly and recognising the urgency of the issue. Residents said the new speed breakers have already forced motorists to slow down, improving safety on the stretch.

While the death of the pet cat cannot be undone, locals say the measures could prevent similar incidents in the future — not just involving animals, but also pedestrians and cyclists who regularly use the road.
