New Delhi: The Supreme Court is due to hear a petition seeking ban on diesel cars in Delhi and other cities, on December 15.
Petitioner Arvind Gupta has requested the Chief Justice of India, TS Thakur, to hear the case and responding to the same Justice Thakur has said that the Delhi pollution cases will be taken up on December 15 and this petition would also be heard on the same day.
As a radical step to cut down pollution, the Delhi government has announced that from the New Year, odd and even numbered cars will be allowed on alternate days. The system will be tested for 15 days, says the government.
On Friday, the Apex Court had called the pollution in Delhi ’embarrassing’.
“Delhi has earned a bad name that it is the most polluted city. Last week a Judge came from International Court of Justice to Delhi. It is very embarrassing for us to tell him that this is the level of pollution in Delhi,” said the court.
The Chief Justice questioned why “there was no discussion taking place, no forum is provided” to deal with the problem.
