A Plus-II student sustained serious injuries after being attacked by pet dogs while returning from school in Pongummoodu on Thursday afternoon, triggering concern over pet safety and owner responsibility in residential areas.
The injured student has been identified as Anna Maria (17), a student of Mary Nilayam Senior Secondary School, and a resident of Manvila.
Attack while returning after exams
The incident occurred around 2.30 pm when Anna Maria and three of her classmates were heading to a friend’s house in Bapuji Nagar after completing their examinations. According to police, two dogs suddenly charged at the group. While two students managed to escape into a nearby house, Anna was knocked to the ground and attacked.
The dogs reportedly bit her legs and thighs repeatedly, causing deep wounds. Though one of her friends attempted to fend off the animals using her school bag, the dogs continued to attack aggressively.
Locals rush to rescue
Despite her injuries, Anna managed to hold the dog’s mouth, preventing serious injuries to her face. Hearing her screams, local residents rushed to the scene and chased the dogs away using sticks and iron rods.
She was immediately shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, where she is undergoing treatment.
Police register case
Police said the dogs involved are Belgian Malinois, a breed often used for military and security purposes abroad due to their strength and aggression. The dogs reportedly belong to Kabir, a resident of Bapuji Nagar, and are believed to have escaped after the gate of the house was left open.
Anna’s father has lodged a formal complaint at the Sreekariyam Police Station, alleging negligence in allowing dangerous pet dogs to roam freely. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
Safety concerns raised
The incident has once again raised concerns about responsible pet ownership, especially when keeping aggressive breeds in densely populated residential areas. Residents have urged authorities to enforce stricter guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future.
