Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s pioneering electric vehicle and battery plant at the Hansalpur facility in Gujarat. This marks a major stride in India’s clean mobility, aligning with its ambitions for self-reliance and green energy manufacturing.

Green mobility gains momentum

At the Hansalpur plant, the Prime Minister flagged off the launch of the e-Vitara, Maruti Suzuki’s first global Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), entirely manufactured in India. The SUV is set to be exported to over 100 countries, including markets in Europe and Japan. Production targets include battery pack options of 49 kWh and 61 kWh, available in front-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations.

Simultaneously, Modi inaugurated local production of hybrid battery electrodes, key components of battery packs, through a collaboration between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki at the TDSG facility. This initiative will result in over 80 percent domestic value-add in battery production, significantly boosting India’s EV supply chain self-reliance.

Economic impact and strategic investments

Maruti Suzuki’s stock rallied nearly 3 percent, hitting a fresh 52-week high on the NSE as investor confidence soared following the announcement.

The plant is expected to become a global EV and battery production hub, with capacity projected up to one million units annually. Suzuki Motor Corporation committed to an investment of ₹70,000 crore over the next five to six years to develop and expand these capabilities.

Strengthening India’s EV ecosystem

Modi underscored the significance of “Made in India” EVs driving global transformation and reiterated his vision for clean energy and industrial autonomy. He referenced strategic initiatives like the National Critical Mineral Mission and Mission Manufacturing to support future-focused sectors such as semiconductors, while encouraging continued policy and infrastructure reform.

Conclusion

With this landmark inauguration, India advances its green mobility and Make-in-India goals. The e-Vitara and associated battery ecosystem reinforce the nation’s trajectory as a self-reliant and globally competitive electric vehicle manufacturing powerhouse.
