Hansalpur, Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged off the first Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, marking a milestone in India’s electric mobility push. The event took place at the Suzuki Motor Plant in Hansalpur, Gujarat, in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Japanese Ambassador Keiichi Ono.
First electric SUV rolls out
The e-Vitara, built on the 40PL dedicated EV platform co-developed with Toyota, is the first all-electric SUV from Maruti Suzuki. The first unit will be exported to the UK, with plans to ship to 100 countries worldwide.
PM Modi hailed the launch as a “special day in India’s quest for self-reliance”, stressing that the plant would make India a hub for EV exports.
Upcoming hybrid battery facility
Alongside the SUV rollout, the PM will also inaugurate the country’s first hybrid battery electrode manufacturing plant at the TDS Li-Ion Battery Gujarat (TDSG) facility, a joint venture of Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki.
Specifications and price expectations
The e-Vitara was first showcased in India at the Bharat Mobility Show 2025. It will be available with 49kWh and 61kWh battery options, with the larger pack supporting a dual-motor AWD (AllGrip-e) system.
Industry estimates suggest a starting price of around ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched in India, the SUV will compete with Mahindra BE6, Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, and others.
