NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended heartfelt greetings to the Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel, veterans, and their families on the occasion of the 93rd Air Force Day, praising their “bravery, discipline and precision” in protecting the nation’s skies.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said, “Greetings to all the courageous Air Warriors and their families on Air Force Day. The Indian Air Force epitomises bravery, discipline and precision. They have played a vital role in safeguarding our skies, including during the most challenging situations.”
Modi further commended the IAF’s contributions during humanitarian crises and natural disasters, stating, “Their role during natural calamities is also very commendable. Their commitment, professionalism and indomitable spirit continue to make every Indian proud.”
President Murmu and defence chiefs pay tributes
Earlier in the day, President Droupadi Murmu also extended her wishes to IAF personnel, veterans, and their families. In a message shared on X, she said, “Warm greetings to all air warriors, veterans and their families on Air Force Day! The Indian Air Force has always demonstrated courage, commitment, and excellence. Our air warriors protect our skies and serve the nation with tireless dedication during disasters and humanitarian missions.”
The President’s message underscored the IAF’s dual role — not only as a powerful arm of India’s defence forces but also as a key player in humanitarian and relief operations across the country and abroad.
Marking the solemn start to the celebrations, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, and Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi paid tributes at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, honouring the fallen heroes who dedicated their lives to the nation.
Grand celebrations at Hindon Air Base
The main Air Force Day celebrations were held at the Hindon Air Base near Delhi, where air warriors performed a ceremonial march past, followed by a stunning air display showcasing the IAF’s operational capabilities.
This year’s static and flying display line-up included some of the most advanced aircraft in the IAF’s arsenal — the Rafale, Sukhoi Su-30MKI, and MiG-29 fighter jets — alongside India’s indigenously developed platforms such as the Netra AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) system and the Akash Surface-to-Air Missile system.
Transport aircraft like the C-17 Globemaster III and C-130J Super Hercules, as well as rotary platforms including Apache attack helicopters equipped with Longbow radar and the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), also formed part of the grand display.
Additionally, an S-band Rohini radar was showcased, highlighting the growing strength of India’s indigenous defence technology.
MiG-21 Bison honoured for its service
In a special tribute, the recently retired MiG-21 Bison was included in the display lineup. Having served the Indian Air Force for over six decades, the MiG-21 played a crucial role in several historical missions, including the 1971 Indo-Pak war and multiple air defence operations. Its inclusion was a nostalgic moment for veterans and aviation enthusiasts alike, symbolising the evolution of India’s air power from legacy platforms to state-of-the-art technology.
IAF: A legacy of courage and excellence
The Indian Air Force, established on October 8, 1932, is celebrating its 93rd anniversary this year. Over the decades, it has emerged as one of the world’s most formidable air forces, recognised for its professionalism, cutting-edge technology, and commitment to humanitarian service.
From conducting daring missions in wartime to playing a leading role in disaster relief — be it in flood-hit regions, earthquake zones, or international rescue efforts — the IAF has consistently demonstrated versatility and courage.
This year’s celebrations not only highlight the IAF’s modernisation drive but also pay homage to the generations of air warriors who have safeguarded India’s sovereignty through courage and sacrifice.
As the nation celebrates Air Force Day, the messages from its leaders reaffirm the country’s deep pride and trust in its air warriors — the sentinels of India’s skies.
