New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Punjab on February 1, where he will rename Adampur Airport and inaugurate the new terminal building at Halwara Airport in Ludhiana district, according to an official release issued on Friday.
PM to visit Adampur airport
As per the official schedule, the Prime Minister will arrive at Adampur Airport at around 3.45 pm. During the visit, he will unveil the new name of the airport as ‘Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport, Adampur’.
The renaming of the airport coincides with the 649th birth anniversary of Sant Guru Ravidas Ji and is intended to honour the revered saint and social reformer. Guru Ravidas Ji’s teachings on equality, compassion and human dignity continue to influence India’s social and spiritual ethos.
Officials said the move reflects recognition of Guru Ravidas Ji’s contributions and the deep reverence held for him, particularly among followers in Punjab and neighbouring states.
Inauguration of Halwara Airport terminal
As part of the same visit, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the Terminal Building at Halwara Airport in Ludhiana district. The new terminal is expected to significantly enhance civil aviation infrastructure in Punjab and serve as a new gateway for Ludhiana and its surrounding industrial and agricultural regions.
Halwara is also home to a strategically important Indian Air Force station. The earlier airport serving Ludhiana had a relatively short runway, which restricted operations to small aircraft. To address this limitation, a new civil enclave has been developed at Halwara with a longer runway capable of handling A320-type aircraft, thereby improving connectivity and operational capacity.
Officials said the new terminal would boost regional air connectivity and support economic growth in one of Punjab’s key industrial hubs.
Focus on sustainable infrastructure
The Halwara Airport terminal has been developed in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of sustainable and environmentally responsible infrastructure. The building incorporates several green and energy-efficient features, including LED lighting, insulated roofing, rainwater harvesting systems, sewage and water treatment plants, and the use of recycled water for landscaping purposes.
The architectural design of the terminal reflects Punjab’s rich cultural heritage, offering passengers a distinctive travel experience that blends modern infrastructure with regional aesthetics.
BJP leaders highlight significance of visit
Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Punjab president Sunil Jakhar described the Prime Minister’s visit as highly significant. He said Prime Minister Modi would also visit Dera Ballan on February 1 and pay his respects there, calling it a gesture that reflects the Prime Minister’s respect for Guru Ravidas Ji and the sentiments of the people of Punjab.
Jakhar pointed out that the visit is taking place on a day when the Union Budget is also being presented, underscoring the importance the Prime Minister attaches to faith and reverence alongside governance. He urged leaders of other political parties not to view the visit through a political lens.
Appeal to view visit beyond politics
Jakhar appealed that the Prime Minister’s visit should be seen through the lens of faith, reverence and respect, rather than political gain. He said the renaming of Adampur Airport as Guru Ravidas Ji Airport had already been announced earlier and would now be formally implemented during the Prime Minister’s visit.
According to him, the move reflects respect towards a community that he claimed had been sidelined or misunderstood in the past. He added that the initiative should be viewed as an inclusive gesture towards society as a whole.
Boost to connectivity and cultural recognition
Officials said the renaming of the airport and the inauguration of the Halwara terminal together symbolise a blend of cultural recognition and infrastructure development. While the former honours a revered spiritual figure, the latter strengthens Punjab’s aviation network and supports economic activity.
Conclusion
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Punjab on February 1 is expected to mark an important milestone in both cultural recognition and infrastructure development in the state. With the renaming of Adampur Airport in honour of Sant Guru Ravidas Ji and the inauguration of the modern Halwara Airport terminal, the visit underscores the government’s focus on inclusive symbolism and improved regional connectivity.
