A tragic accident at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad claimed the life of an on-duty police inspector and left 11 others injured on Saturday evening, raising serious questions about safety arrangements at large public events.

The incident occurred around 6 pm when a giant swing at the fairgrounds snapped mid-air and crashed to the ground while carrying nearly 19 people. Shockingly, the mishap took place barely an hour after a gate at the venue had collapsed, injuring two people, including a child.

Officer killed during rescue operation

The deceased has been identified as Inspector Jagdish Prasad of Palwal Police, who was deployed on fair duty and serving as the security in-charge of the swing complex. Officials said the inspector rushed to the spot immediately after the swing malfunctioned and helped rescue several trapped riders.

While assisting victims, the swing reportedly broke from its second end and fell completely, seriously injuring the inspector. He sustained severe head and facial injuries and later succumbed. Inspector Prasad, a native of Mathura, was due to retire in March after 36 years of service in the Haryana Armed Police.

Injured shifted to hospitals

Rescue operations were launched promptly by police, officials, and local shopkeepers. Nine injured persons were shifted to a private hospital, while four were taken to BK Hospital. Among the injured were police personnel, women, and visitors from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi-NCR.

Authorities order probe

Deputy Commissioner Ayush Sinha confirmed that an FIR would be registered and strict action taken against those responsible. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed deep grief and assured all necessary support to the bereaved family and injured persons. Tourism Minister Arvind Sharma ordered a detailed investigation into the incident.

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela, an annual cultural event in Faridabad, is scheduled to continue until February 15.
