Students and faculty members of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) College in Tallakulam have come together to lodge a formal complaint against acting principal B George, accusing him of violating university norms and causing a financial setback of ₹2.5 crore to the institution.

According to the petition, submitted to Higher Education Minister Govi. Chezhiaan and other top education officials, George took charge on January 30 and soon after allegedly halted admissions for the BA Sociology course without consulting the admission committee. This move reportedly led to a sharp dip in student strength — from 1,450 to 1,100 — and a substantial financial loss due to reduced tuition intake.

Despite these allegations, George denied any wrongdoing. He claimed the decision was taken due to a lack of classroom space. “We could not admit new students for BA Sociology this year due to infrastructure constraints. Once new classrooms are ready, admissions will resume in the next academic cycle,” he told TNIE, adding that the complaints were orchestrated by 120 temporary faculty members making baseless claims.

An MKU official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that both parties have been asked to provide formal explanations. A detailed meeting to address the issue is scheduled to be held at the university on Friday.
