
Rare 1930 British Indian passport, used before independence
Historical artifacts have always fascinated people, offering a glimpse into India’s colonial past. Recently, an internet user shared a 95-year-old British Indian passport, sparking nostalgia and admiration across social media.
The image, posted by X user @LostTemple7, features a worn-out, royal blue passport belonging to Kartar Singh, adorned with the British monarch’s monogram. The post notes that such passports were discontinued post-independence.
Since being uploaded, the post has garnered over 1.3 million views, with many calling it a “treasured possession” and suggesting it deserves a place in a museum. Users also shared personal connections, with one commenting, “My grandfather had one of these.”
This isn’t the first time an old British Indian passport has gone viral. Previously, Anshuman Singh posted about his grandfather’s 1931 passport from Lahore, then part of British India, valid in Kenya Colony and India. The document contained a photograph and a signature in Urdu, adding to its historical value.
