A late-night adventure to film social media reels took a dangerous turn at Nellarachal viewpoint, Ambalavayal, when a jeep careened off a slope and plunged into a reservoir in the early hours of Saturday. The vehicle, reportedly being driven recklessly near the dam’s edge, lost control on the steep incline.
All five young men inside the jeep had a narrow escape and emerged unscathed. However, what followed was far from a smooth ride.
Police confirmed that the group had ventured to the location specifically to shoot reels. According to locals, the jeep was spotted late at night performing risky manoeuvres. By morning, it was seen submerged in water. The vehicle was retrieved with help from local residents.
The occupants have been identified as PK Fayis of Meenangadi, and Muhammad Rahin, Muhammad Rijas, Muhammad Shafi, and Muhammad Shanif—all hailing from Vadakara. They were arrested and produced before the court.
This is not the first incident at the spot. A tractor had recently overturned at the same location, prompting concerns over the growing trend of unsafe off-road stunts for social media at Nellarachal.
Residents and local leaders are now demanding immediate restrictions and better safety measures. Block Panchayat member AS Vijaya called for strict regulation of visitors. Ambalavayal SHO Anoop confirmed tighter policing of the area and warned of action against unauthorised activities.
