Early life and education
Born on December 28, 1937, Ratan Tata was the eldest son of Naval Tata and Sonoo Commissariat. He was raised by his grandmother, Lady Navajbai Tata, in an environment that emphasised philanthropy and public service.
He completed his early schooling at Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai, before moving to Cornell University in 1955, where he earned a degree in architecture and structural engineering.

Ratan Tata began his career with the Tata Group in 1962, starting at Tata Industries. He gained hands-on experience at TELCO (now Tata Motors) and Tata Steel before joining the Tata Sons board in 1974. In 1991, he took over as chairman, guiding the conglomerate to unprecedented global success.
During his tenure, Tata Group made bold acquisitions, including Corus, the UK-based Jaguar and Land Rover brands, and Tetley, the latter becoming the world’s second-largest tea company in 2000. While some ventures were highly successful, others, like a failed telecom project, were less so.
