Rohit Pawar, nephew of late Maharashtra leader Ajit Pawar, has raised serious concerns over the investigation into the January 28 plane crash that claimed his uncle’s life near Baramati airport.
Speaking to the media, Rohit Pawar said he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the resignation of Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu until the inquiry concludes. Copies of the letter were also sent to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Questions over investigation and audit
The crash occurred as a Learjet 45 attempted to land, killing Ajit Pawar and four others. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the technical investigation, with a preliminary report expected by February 27.
Rohit Pawar questioned how the Digital Flight Data Recorder was successfully downloaded while the Cockpit Voice Recorder reportedly suffered thermal damage. He also criticised the composition of a special audit panel, alleging that it lacked type-rated pilots familiar with the Learjet 45.
Allegations on operator practices
He further raised concerns about the aircraft operator, VSR Ventures, alleging irregularities in pilot assignments, breath analyser compliance, engine maintenance records and insurance coverage.
According to him, the aircraft, valued at approximately ₹35 crore, was insured for ₹55 crore, with additional liability coverage of ₹210 crore — details he described as “deeply concerning”.
He proposed the formation of an independent, time-bound committee including retired officials, a former judge, opposition representatives and family members to restore public trust.
Government response
Sources close to the Aviation Minister dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. They emphasised that investigations are conducted in accordance with international AAIB and ICAO norms and are evidence-driven.
As the probe continues, demands for clarity and accountability remain strong among family members and political leaders.
