A Reddit post has gone viral after a young man from a rural background shared his family’s heartbreaking financial struggles, exacerbated by his sister’s wedding and dowry expenses. The family borrowed around ₹15 lakh from local moneylenders, who charged exorbitant interest rates, to fund the wedding. With no assets or savings to fall back on, the family’s hopes rested on the young man securing a job after his graduation to help pay off the debt. Unfortunately, his efforts have been in vain as he failed to secure a job despite trying off-campus placements.
The family’s emotional strain has been compounded by his mother’s 20-year battle with an undiagnosed illness, and she is scheduled to undergo surgery at AIIMS. The young man expressed the difficulty of being away from home and hearing his mother’s suffering over the phone. Adding to the pain, he was unable to attend his sister’s wedding in Bihar due to the financial strain.
The situation worsens as the young man’s younger siblings in the village struggle with basic needs. He recalled a particularly painful conversation where his sister mentioned they had only puffed rice for dinner. Unable to ignore their distress, he managed to send ₹1,000 with the help of friends.
In his post, he urges others to avoid borrowing money for weddings or similar events, warning of the severe consequences. He also shared his father’s tragic past, which may have contributed to the family’s current difficulties.
