A 30-year-old security supervisor, Sayan Kundu, was brutally assaulted outside his home on Ananda Palit Road on Sunday evening after he protested against the loud bursting of crackers. The incident, which occurred between 7:30 PM and 10:30 PM, involved a group of 15 to 18 individuals who attacked Sayan multiple times, leaving him with serious injuries.
Sayan’s father, Sushil Kundu (63), also attempted to intervene but faced verbal and physical abuse. The altercation was sparked by concerns for Sayan’s ailing mother, Khukumoni, who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and was struggling to breathe due to the noise and smoke from the fireworks.
Sayan recounted that after his elder brother left the house, a group began bursting crackers right at their doorstep. Despite their pleas for the revellers to move elsewhere, tensions escalated. Sayan stated, “When three men attacked me, I refused to relent. They kicked and hit me… it was only when some local women dragged me to a house that the assault stopped.”
Following the initial attack, Sayan tried to lodge a complaint at the Entally police station, but alleged that officers attempted to downplay the incident and suggested settling the matter informally. The police denied these claims, asserting they needed time to prepare a formal FIR.
In response to the assaults, a father-son duo, Raju Roy (51) and Sujoy Roy (19), have been arrested. Authorities have initiated a case under relevant sections of the law. Sayan has since received medical treatment and has been discharged from the hospital.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about noise pollution and community safety during festival celebrations, particularly in residential areas.
