Singer Sona Mohapatra criticized Congressman Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday for his recent comments criticizing Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai and Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the opening of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya last month. In a series of tweets, Ms. Mohapatra criticized politicians for using women as political props and stood up for Aishwarya Rai against remarks she thought were demeaning.

During the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi recently made a public speech criticizing the BJP for the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ event that was held at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22. The head of the Congress party claimed that the OBCs and Dalits, who make up 73% of the nation’s population, were noticeably missing from the lavish event that Bollywood stars and billionaires attended.

“Did you see the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony at the Ram Temple? Was there a single OBC face? There was Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, and Narendra Modi,” Rahul Gandhi had said.

The BJP responded with a collage of various Rahul Gandhi speeches where the 53-year-old can be heard mentioning the Bollywood actor.

“Television channels only show Aishwarya Rai dancing. They don’t show anything about the poor people,” Rahul Gandhi said in one of the speeches.

Expressing her disapproval, Ms Mohapatra questioned the need for such remarks in an already sexist landscape.

“What’s with politicians demeaning women in their speeches to get some brownie points in a sexist landscape? Dear Rahul Gandhi, sure someone has demeaned your own mother (Sonia Gandhi), sister (Priyanka Gandhi) similarly in the past, and irrespective you ought to know better? Also, Aishwarya Rai dances beautifully,” the singer posted on X.

Numerous celebrities attended the grand opening ceremony of the Ram Temple, which was presides over by Prime Minister Modi. “A farmer wasn’t visible to me there. There was not a single laborer or small retailer in sight. However, Rahul Gandhi stated, “all the billionaires were visible and there they were making lengthy speeches to the media.”

The Congressman drew attention to the sharp contrast between the difficulties that regular people face on a daily basis and the privileged few who attend ceremonial occasions like the Ram Temple ceremony.
