Mathura, Uttar Pradesh — Vrindavan-based spiritual figure Premanand Maharaj has found himself embroiled in controversy after a video of his remarks about women began circulating widely on social media. In the video, he questions the morality of modern youth, stating that “only 2 to 4 out of 100 girls remain pure”, implying most are involved in romantic or physical relationships.

His comments have ignited widespread backlash, with critics condemning the statements as regressive and demeaning toward women. Social media platforms were flooded with reactions, many labelling the remarks misogynistic and damaging to societal progress.

In the video, Premanand also speaks about men, saying those who date multiple women become “accustomed to unfaithfulness” and cannot remain loyal to their spouses. Similarly, he claims women who’ve had multiple partners “lack the strength to accept a husband.” He framed “purity” in terms of monogamy and devotion to one man, drawing outrage for promoting outdated gender norms.

Although Premanand Maharaj commands a strong following for his spiritual discourses, this incident has divided public opinion. While some continue to support him, others—especially youth and women’s rights groups—have criticized his views as patriarchal and harmful.

This isn’t an isolated episode. Earlier, Aniruddhacharya Maharaj, another religious leader from Uttar Pradesh, was forced to apologise after similar remarks, following intervention by the National Commission for Women.

The video has reopened debates on freedom of expression, religious influence, and gender sensitivity in public discourse.
