New Delhi: A 19-year-old youth from Uttar Pradesh, who identified himself as Rambhakt Gopal, opened fire on anti-CAA protesters, most of whom were students, in Delhi on the morning of January 30. Before the people managed to subdue Gopal, without the help of the police, he managed to injure one student, whose plight has now added fuel to the flames of the ongoing fight against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAA).
Shadaab Farooq, the student who was shot, was one of the people who tried to pacify and calm Rambhakt Gopal before he opened fire at random. He was rushed to the trauma centre at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment.
The photos of the incident showing an injured Shadaab climbing over barricades, that were installed by the police, in order to go get medical attention, is what has now caused outrage.
Farooq, a singer, voice-over artist and a mass media student, was seen clutching his bleeding arm after he was shot in the left wrist, as he was being escorted by the people around him before he had to climb over the barricades.
An enraged Asaduddin Owaisi, reacting to the incident, attacked the Delhi Police for being “helpless bystanders”.
Taking to Twitter, the Hyderabad-based AIMIM chief wrote, “What happened to the bravado that you showed in #Jamia last month? If there’s a prize for being ‘helpless’ bystanders, you’d win it every time.” With the tweet, he attached a picture of the injured student climbing over the barricade and into a sea of police personnel.
. @DelhiPolice What happened to the bravado that you showed in #Jamia last month?
If there’s a prize for being ‘helpless’ bystanders, you’d win it every time. Can you explain why a gunshot victim had to CLIMB over a barricade?

It can be recalled that just a few days ago, Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur had egged a crowd on to say “goli maaro” (shoot) during an election rally in Delhi.
