Dr Asna, a native of Cheruvanchery in Kannur—an area long marked by political unrest—got married on Saturday, marking a powerful moment of hope and resilience. Asna, now a practicing ophthalmologist, tied the knot with Nikhil, a businessman based abroad and hailing from Alakode, also in Kannur district.
Her journey has been nothing short of remarkable. At just six years old, on September 27, 2000, Asna lost her right leg in a bomb blast triggered by political violence during local body elections. While she was playing in the courtyard of her home, a clash between political workers escalated into a bombing. A country bomb hurled toward her house caused grave injuries to Asna, her mother Shantha, and her brother Anand.
Asna underwent a long and painful recovery, spending over three months in hospital. Her leg had to be amputated below the knee. But amidst her suffering, the kindness and dedication of the doctors and nurses she encountered left a lasting impact. It was during these trying moments that young Asna resolved to become a doctor herself.
She went on to pursue her MBBS at Government Medical College, Kozhikode, completing her degree in 2020. She later specialized in ophthalmology at the same institution and, in January 2025, joined a private hospital in Vadakara.
Her father, Nanu, passed away last year. Her brother Anand now works in the merchant navy.
Dr Asna’s story is one of strength, purpose, and triumph over tragedy.
