New Delhi: Bibhav Kumar, Delhi Chief Minister’s secretary has been arrested by the Delhi police in connection with an assault case filed by Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal.

Maliwal, in her FIR had alleged that Bibhav Kumar, assaulted her when she visited Kejriwal’s residence on Monday.

Kumar was taken into custody from the chief minister’s residence by a team from the Delhi Police around noon, as confirmed by a senior police official. He is currently being interrogated at the police station.

His legal representative stated that despite reaching out to the authorities via email and expressing willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation, they have yet to receive any communication from the police. “We’ve not received any information from the police yet. We’ve sent them an email that we will cooperate in the investigation,” Bibhav Kumar’s lawyer Karan Sharma informed news agency ANI.

This incident has sparked a political uproar, with the BJP sharply criticizing Kejriwal for his silence. Gaurav Bhatia, a spokesperson for the BJP, even went as far as labeling  Kejriwal as the “main criminal” due to his perceived inaction during the assault. The BJP also accused the AAP of shielding  Kejriwal’s personal secretary despite substantial evidence against him.

A video purportedly depicting the alleged assault incident at the Delhi Chief Minister’s residence is circulating on social media, showing a confrontation between the staff stationed at the CM’s residence and the AAP Rajya Sabha MP.

In her FIR, Ms. Maliwal accused Mr. Kumar of physically attacking her, including hitting her in the chest, stomach, and pelvic area with his legs. She described feeling shocked and screaming for help as Kumar continued to assault her. The FIR details that despite her attempts to defend herself, Kumar persisted in attacking her.
