In a tragic incident, an 18-year-old labourer died after falling from the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge on Sunday while allegedly trying to film a reel on the bridge railings.
The deceased was identified as Rabil Ali, a native of Barpeta district.
Lost balance while filming
According to police, the teenager was accompanied by three others when the accident took place.
Officials said he climbed onto a section of the railings to record a social media reel but lost balance and slipped.
He fell onto a sand bar below, where construction materials had reportedly been kept.
People nearby immediately raised an alarm and informed police.
Friends detained for questioning
Police said Rabil’s companions — Saidul Ali, Rabiul Ali and Faruk Ali — have been detained for questioning.
Authorities are investigating the exact sequence of events and whether any other factors contributed to the fall.
Postmortem underway
The body was sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination.
Some locals reportedly raised suspicion of possible substance abuse among the group, though police have not confirmed this.
Safety warning over risky reels
The Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge, connecting Guwahati to the northern banks of the Brahmaputra, was inaugurated earlier this year.
The incident has once again raised concerns over dangerous stunts and social media reel culture in risky public spaces.
