On Wednesday, the Telangana government announced a significant partnership with Google, which will see the tech giant establish India’s first Google Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC) in Hyderabad. The GSEC, located in the state capital, will be the second such facility in the Asia-Pacific region, following Tokyo, and the fifth globally, joining centers in Dublin, Munich, and Malaga.
The GSEC will focus on cybersecurity, playing a key role in the development of advanced security and online safety products tailored for the Indian market. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Industries and IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu held pivotal meetings with Google’s leadership during a visit to the company’s global headquarters in August 2024, where they successfully convinced the company to set up the centre in Hyderabad.
After the agreement was finalized, Chief Minister Reddy expressed his pride, emphasizing that this collaboration highlights Hyderabad’s position as a leading global IT and innovation hub. He further noted that Telangana has consistently been at the forefront of digital skill development and has become a significant center for global IT/ITES development, with major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Meta already calling the city home.
Royal Hansen, Google’s Vice President of Engineering for Privacy, Safety, and Security, also expressed enthusiasm for the GSEC, calling Hyderabad a prime location to become a global hub for safety engineering and digital security.
The collaboration signals further potential for partnerships between Google and the Telangana government, with plans to explore initiatives like the Google-powered Intelligent Traffic Management System.
