At least three people were killed and another was critically injured after a BMW crashed on the Mumbai Coastal Road near Lotus Jetty in the early hours of Sunday.
The accident occurred at around 5.20 am when the car was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali. According to police, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while speeding.
The BMW reportedly crashed into a boundary wall before plunging off the bridge, leaving several occupants seriously injured.
Three occupants declared dead
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), two of the deceased were identified as Shanay Gajjal, 21, and Dhirya Seth, 17. An unidentified man aged around 25 was also declared brought dead.
The fourth occupant, an unidentified man believed to be around 20 years old, suffered severe injuries in the crash. He is currently receiving treatment in the trauma ward of a hospital and remains in critical condition.
Police begin investigation
Police have launched an inquiry into the accident and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the alleged role of speeding.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks associated with high-speed driving, particularly during the early morning hours when roads may have fewer vehicles but drivers can be tempted to travel at higher speeds.
The Mumbai Coastal Road is a 10.58-km high-speed corridor connecting Marine Drive in south Mumbai with the Worli end of the Bandra–Worli Sea Link. The road is an important east-west link in the city and carries significant traffic.
