Chennai: In an article titled ‘Social Media Obsession and Anxiety’ by Sarah Fader on the portal of Anxiety and Depression Association of America, says that a person who uses social media cannot stay away too long from checking notifications for every few minutes. There are several disorders that the article mentions from which ‘Negative impacts in your personal or professional life due to social media usage’ holds good for this woman who has ended her life just for being advised not to use it excessively.
Anitha, a 24-year-old woman, resident of Ariyalur, who is a frequent user of Chinese-based dubsmash app TikTok, has resorted to a hasty decision of committing suicide, just because her husband Palanivel advised her to stop using it excessively.
Upset by this, Anitha reportedly, consumed pesticide and also went to the extent of making a video of her drinking it on TikTok.
Although she was taken to Ariyalur General Hospital, after failing to respond to treatment Anitha breathed her last.
Meanwhile, the family members of Anitha have alleged that she was so much addicted to the app, that she had almost forgotten that she had a family.
The video has now gone viral across all social media platforms.
It may be recalled that TikTok was on the verge of a total ban in India as it was facing legal charges for its adult contents that could have negative impact on children psyche.
Social activist Muthu Kumar had filed a case in the Madras High Court to impose a ban on the usage of the app. On April 3, it had directed the Central government to ban the app but later revoked it on April 24 after imposing reasonable restrictions.
