THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a heartbreaking incident, a 19-year-old polytechnic student allegedly died by suicide after setting herself ablaze at her home in Nadukkadu near Naruvamoodu on Monday.

The deceased, Mahima Suresh, was the daughter of Suresh Kumar and Divya. She was a second-year Commercial Practice student at Kaimanam Women’s Polytechnic and served as the magazine editor of the college union.

The incident occurred while Mahima was alone at home. Her elder sister had briefly stepped out to deliver food to their parents, who operate shops at the nearby Naruvamoodu junction. Hearing Mahima’s screams, concerned neighbours rushed over but found the doors locked. They managed to break open the back door and rushed her to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital. Despite their efforts, Mahima succumbed to her injuries.

Police have registered a case and said initial indications point to death by suicide. There are no signs of foul play, and her body remains at the medical college hospital for further procedures.

Ward member Rajith R expressed shock over the tragedy. “Mahima was bold, cheerful, and loved by everyone. She came from a supportive family where the daughters were given freedom. There were no visible signs of distress,” he said.

Her mobile phone has been seized by police for forensic analysis, and authorities hope the findings may shed light on the circumstances leading to her death.
