A horrific accident involving a BEST bus claimed the lives of seven people on SG Barve Road, Kurla (West), Mumbai. Among the deceased is 20-year-old Afreen Shah, who tragically lost her life on her first day at a new job. Afreen’s father, Abdul Salim Shah, recounted her last phone call, during which she expressed difficulty in finding an autorickshaw to return home. Minutes later, he received the devastating news from a hospital staffer.
Cause of the Accident
The bus driver, Sanjay More, attributed the crash to confusion with the electric bus’s automatic transmission system. He reportedly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. More has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and underwent a medical examination. Eyewitnesses allege he may have been under the influence of alcohol.
Calls for Action
Afreen’s father called for strict government action to address issues like illegal parking, encroachments, and metro work congestion that exacerbate road hazards. Injured victims are being treated at various hospitals, including Bhabha Hospital and Sion Hospital.
