Basti, Uttar Pradesh: A deeply distressing case has emerged from Bijra village in the Harraiya police limits of Basti district, where 21-year-old Raj took his own life after enduring ongoing mental harassment by his in-laws. The young man reportedly consumed poison on Sunday, July 27, following emotional turmoil caused by a condition set by his wife’s family: their daughter would only return to his home if he transferred land and property in her name.
Before taking the tragic step, Raj recorded a video explaining his plight — a clip that is now widely circulating on social media. In his final statement, Raj revealed that his in-laws had even threatened to terminate his wife’s pregnancy if their demands weren’t met.
Raj and Khushi, a resident of Mahadevari, had tied the knot on April 22 this year. However, their marriage quickly ran into trouble. Just days after the wedding, Khushi left for her parents’ house and never returned. Despite Raj’s repeated attempts to reconcile, her family refused to send her back, escalating tensions.
Raj had earlier lodged a formal complaint at the women’s police outpost in Harraiya and submitted a written statement accusing his in-laws of harassment. His family alleges intense emotional pressure drove him to suicide.
After Raj consumed poison, emergency services rushed him to Harraiya Community Health Centre and later referred him to a higher facility. Tragically, he died en route. Harraiya police have seized the body for autopsy and begun an investigation. Legal action will follow based on findings.
