Jayant Chaudhary, who is the grandson of the revered farmers’ leader Charan Singh, welcomed the announcement with a succinct comment in Devnagari script.
In the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the decision was met with widespread praise. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, Speaker Satish Mahana, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna all hailed the decision, recognizing the significant contributions of the late leader to the welfare of farmers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that former Prime Ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, along with eminent agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan, would be conferred with the Bharat Ratna.
Charan Singh, who served as India’s fifth Prime Minister for a brief period in 1979, also held the position of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on two occasions – from April 3, 1967, to February 25, 1968, and from February 18, 1970, to October 1, 1970. The Bharat Ratna conferred upon him is a tribute to his unparalleled dedication and service to the nation.
