Uttarkashi: Rescuers achieved progress in vertically drilling through nearly 20 meters down the hill above the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel on the first day of the new approach to reach 41 workers trapped inside for 14 days. Using a 1.2-meter diameter hole for evacuation, the drilling is expected to take about four days if there are no obstacles.
The new approach involves inserting 700mm wide pipes to create an escape passage. However, drilling from the hilltop may pose a risk to the tunnel’s stability, potentially leading to collapse or structural damage. Officials are consulting experts to manage potential hazards and prioritize the safety of the trapped workers.
