Train journeys are a unique experience for travelers, with food being an essential part of the adventure. However, many passengers often express concerns about the quality and hygiene of the food served on board, particularly regarding the mixing of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. For some, it’s difficult to find exclusively vegetarian meals. However, there’s a special train that caters exclusively to vegetarian passengers—the Vande Bharat Express running between Delhi and Katra.
This semi-high-speed train is India’s first fully vegetarian service, offering only plant-based meals to its passengers. The train ensures a strictly vegetarian environment by prohibiting non-vegetarian food or snacks from being carried on board. The entire food preparation process is carefully curated with only vegetarian ingredients in dedicated kitchens, and even the waiters are restricted from handling non-vegetarian food.
The Vande Bharat Express has received the prestigious Sattvik certification, awarded by the Sattvik Council of India in collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). This certification is part of a broader effort to promote vegetarian-friendly travel, especially on routes connecting religious sites like Shri Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra.
Additionally, in response to the growing health-conscious traveler segment, the train also offers nutritious options, such as low-calorie meals, gluten-free snacks, and eco-friendly packaging, contributing to both passenger well-being and environmental sustainability.
