Kolkata Police Special Task Force and the detective department apprehended an individual in Mumbai suspected of conducting reconnaissance around the residence and offices of Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee. Identified as Rajaram Rege, the individual attempted to contact Banerjee and his personal assistant after obtaining their phone numbers, according to officials.
An IPS officer stated that Rege had allegedly encountered Mumbai terror attack prime accused David Headley previously, among others. The arrest followed Rege’s visit to Kolkata, during which he reportedly stayed in the city and surveilled Banerjee’s properties and workplace. After gathering Banerjee’s contact details, Rege purportedly attempted to establish communication before departing back to Mumbai from a hotel in Kolkata’s Shakespeare Sarani area.
Charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation, are being pursued against Rege, as indicated by the officer. The arrest underscores the vigilance of law enforcement agencies in safeguarding public figures and addressing potential security threats.
