Bengal Appoints New Police Chief Following Election Commission Directive

After the Election Commission dismissed state Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar, Bengal’s police chief is now Vivek Sahay, an police chief officer from the 1988 batch. The state’s head of the Home Guards was Mr. Sahay.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar met with his two recently appointed associates, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, prior to their removal.

Violence related to polls has occurred on multiple occasions in Bengal in recent years. This action is a component of the poll panel’s pledge to guarantee fair competition for all political parties in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which are scheduled to start on April 19.

The top poll body has also removed Home Secretaries and top bureaucrats from a handful of states including Gujarat, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.
