Kolkata: In a tragic incident in Joynagar, South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, Saifuddin Laskar, a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and area president of Bamungachi, was shot dead near his residence on Monday morning by unidentified miscreants. Following the incident, a group of people, purportedly supporters of Laskar, caught one of the alleged assailants and reportedly lynched him.
The deceased TMC leader’s wife serves as a panchayat pradhan. Tensions escalated as local TMC leaders accused CPI(M) supporters of being responsible for Laskar’s killing. In retaliation, alleged supporters of Laskar reportedly vandalized houses and set some ablaze in nearby areas, according to CPI(M) supporters.
Expressing condolences, CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty emphasized the importance of a thorough police investigation to apprehend the killers and uncover any underlying conspiracy. He dismissed allegations of CPI(M) involvement, attributing the incident to internal strife within the TMC. The situation underscores the need for a comprehensive inquiry to bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
