A woman and her three-year-old daughter were killed and another family member critically injured in a firecracker explosion at Mahajanpur village under Jagatpur police limits on Thursday evening, police said.
Explosion inside house claims two lives
The deceased have been identified as Sudhansubala Nayak and her daughter, Stitaprangya Nayak. According to officials, the blast occurred inside their house, where firecrackers had allegedly been stored.
Preliminary inquiry indicates that family members were engaged in making firecrackers at the time of the explosion. The impact of the blast severely damaged two rooms of the house, an officer said.
All three injured were immediately rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital for treatment. However, Sudhansubala and her daughter succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment.
One woman critical, probe under way
Bharati Nayak, who sustained serious injuries in the explosion, remains critical and has been placed on ventilator support, police confirmed.
The Odisha Police said the incident took place under the jurisdiction of the Jagatpur Police Station. A case has been registered, and an investigation is under way to ascertain the exact cause of the mishap.
Authorities are also examining whether safety norms related to storage and handling of firecrackers were followed.
The tragic incident has left Mahajanpur village in shock, with neighbours expressing grief over the loss of the young child and her mother.
