New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah, on Wednesday held the Trinamool Congress responsible for the violence that unleashed in West Bengal and said that if not for the CRPF Jawans, he may have not come out of the state alive.

Addressing a news conference at the party headquarters in Delhi, he said that it was not the BJP, which sparked violence, but it was the TMC. “If the BJP was responsible for the poll violence, the similar situation would have been seen in rest of the states as well and not just in West Bengal,” he said adding that in the last six phases of the LS polls, it was only West Bengal, which was witnessing unrest and violence.

“Mamta Banerjee claims that the BJP is behind the violence in West Bengal. I want to tell her that she is fighting on just 42 seats, while we are fighting across the nation. We are facing many regional parties, but there has been no violence elsewhere,” he said.
Clashes broke out during Amit Shah’s mega rally in West Bengal on Tuesday. His convoy was attacked by alleged TMC supporters from inside the hostel of Vidyasagar College, triggering a clash between supporters of the two parties, officials said. Shah said that even as the violence erupted, the police remained to be mere mute spectators, who rather tried to provoke the BJP workers.

“Our posters were pulled down three hours before the roadshow. Several tactics were applied to provoke our workers, but nothing worked,” he said adding that the TMC workers, on Tuesday broke Ishwar Chand Vidyasagar’s statue and blamed it on the BJP. He said that the gate of the university was closed and that BJP workers were outside the university, hence they could not have broken the statue.

Meanwhile, Shah also raised questions on the impartiality of the Election Commission and said that EC has shown double standards and has been partial towards TMC.
