Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has launched a sharp critique of Riyan Parag, accusing the Rajasthan Royals captain of showing a lack of trust in senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja during their narrow loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026.

The Royals suffered a surprise defeat against a struggling KKR side that had lost its first six matches, with Rinku Singh (53 off 34) and Anukul Roy (29 off 16) guiding the chase in a tense final over.

Ashwin questions captaincy call

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin did not hold back as he criticised Parag’s decision not to bowl Jadeja in the crucial death overs despite his impressive spell.

Jadeja had figures of two wickets for under 10 runs in three overs, making him one of RR’s most effective bowlers on the day.

“You have a world-class left-arm spinner who has conceded barely anything and taken wickets. Not bowling him shows a mindset issue,” Ashwin said, questioning the logic behind the move.

‘Lack of trust’ in senior player

Ashwin argued that the decision reflected a deeper issue of trust within the team setup. He suggested that ignoring a proven performer like Jadeja in key moments could have long-term consequences.

According to him, even if match-ups or data suggest otherwise, backing experienced players in crunch situations is essential for team confidence.

“It is possible he gets hit, but by not bowling him, you are not showing trust in your bowling unit,” Ashwin remarked.

Data vs instinct debate

The former off-spinner acknowledged that modern T20 cricket often relies heavily on data and match-up analysis — particularly avoiding left-arm spinners against left-handed batters like Rinku Singh.

However, he stressed that strict adherence to numbers should not override on-field instincts, especially when a bowler is in form.

Ashwin emphasised that confidence and rhythm can outweigh statistical disadvantages in high-pressure moments.

Bigger picture for team balance

Ashwin also highlighted how such decisions impact team dynamics. He explained that if players feel they are not trusted in certain match situations, it can affect their mindset and willingness to step up.

Drawing comparisons, he pointed out that teams rarely hold back their key batters in crunch situations — suggesting the same principle should apply to bowlers.

Match recap

The contest saw KKR finally register their first win of the season after a string of losses. Rinku Singh anchored the chase with a composed half-century, while Anukul Roy provided crucial support late in the innings.

Despite Rajasthan Royals being in a strong position at various stages, the match slipped away in the final overs.

Conclusion

Ashwin’s remarks have reignited the debate around captaincy decisions in T20 cricket — balancing data-driven strategies with instinct and trust in experienced players.

For Riyan Parag, the criticism underscores the challenges of leadership in high-pressure leagues like the IPL, where a single decision can define the outcome of a match.
