Dharwad: There has been a decline in HIV affected cases in the district. In 2008-09, a total of 2347 persons tested positive out of 13,387 who underwent medical tests. Now this figure has drastically come down. In 2016, only 420 persons were tested positive out of the 3295 diagnosed, said District Principal and Sessions Judge V Shreeshanand.

Speaking after flagging off the AIDS Awareness Jatha on the occasion of World AIDS Day here on Thursday, the district judge said the progress achieved in containing the spread of the disease was due to the following of safe sex measures.

“Only a healthy society will help in the development of our country. People must follow safety measures to protect themselves from AIDS”, the judge said.

Dr. Yashavant Madankar delivered a special lecture, State Bal Vikas Academy President Vedavyas Koulagi, judges S S Ballolli, Siddappa Hosamani, Bar Association President V D Kamareddy and others were present.

District Health Officer Dr. R M Doddamani presided over the event.

The programme was held under the aegis of District Legal Service Authority, District Administration, District AIDS Prevention Unit, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Bar Association and Information Department.
